Project of the Month ~ April 2006
Red Lake River
Restoration and Habitat Improvement—Crookston,
MN
Created as a replacement
for the former Otter Tail power dam, the
constructed rock rapids strike a balance
among safety, functionality, recreation,
aesthetics, and conservation. The old concrete
dam posed a threat on several fronts—to
people, wildlife, and the environment. The
rapids improve fish habitat and allow walleye
and lake sturgeon to move upstream to historic
spawning sites. Erosion of the river bank
and sedimentation is minimized, and public
safety and recreational opportunities are
enhanced.
